God has claimed another of His angels. Ola Krystyna Maria Zabawa (nee Kowalczuk) passed away on February 19, 2015 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Ola was predeceased by her husband Jozef Zabawa; her two brothers John Kowalczuk (Mary) and Stefan Kowalczuk (Margaret); and brother-in-law Father Kazimierz Zabawa.

Ola, born February 10, 1930, has left a legacy with the world and we are extremely grateful. Ola will be lovingly remembered by her family: daughters Kristina (James), Lucia (Ludwik); grandchildren Tom (Isela), Julia (Jim), Michael, Laura, and Theresa; along with her four great-grandchildren Noelia, Maya, Siena, and Ethan; and many nieces and nephews.

Ola was a loving and giving wife, mother, caregiver, and friend. She had overcome many hardships in her youth, as had countless people during WWII. Ola’s home in Poland was invaded, the family forced to Siberia, where she suffered disease, starvation, and the loss of three sisters. Coming to Canada after the war, Ola felt blessed at being given another chance at life. She worked very hard as a sewing machine operator, supporting her family and ensuring her children would always have food on the table. She took great pleasure in spending time with her grandchildren at Sosniny and Podlesie, swimming in the pond, fishing, and taking care of the apiary.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the health care workers at Beacon Hill Lodge for their patience, friendship, and compassion. As per Ola’s wishes, a private funeral was held.

Donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society.

Time slips by but memories stay – Mom, you will always be in our hearts.
