Peacefully, with her family by her side, Betty Cornwell passed away at the age of 91 years on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at the Victoria General Hospital.

Betty will be lovingly remembered by her children: Cathy Cornwell-Brown (George Foster), Leslie Cornwell (Glenn Paulley), Kim (Brian) Hagan, and grandchildren: Aaron, Erika, Samantha, Andrew and Ryan.

Betty was predeceased by her beloved husband Jack, and her siblings: Bill Blyth and Doreen Welden.

Betty was born and raised in Esterhazy, Saskatchewan and carried her small-town sense of community with her throughout her life. She moved to Winnipeg to train as an RN at the Winnipeg General Hospital and graduated in 1947, mostly working in the operating room. Betty met Jack at the badminton club and they were married in 1952 - a strong partnership that lasted over 60 years. She eventually left nursing and raised their daughters - building a loving and close-knit family. In 2012 she moved to the Seine River Retirement Residence where she enjoyed making many new friends among the residents and staff, and being involved in many activities.

With an innate ability to organize and manage, she was a long term and active member of the Nurse’s Alumni Association; she served in many capacities in the P.E.O sisterhood for over 50 years; and she was a lifelong member of the United Church of Canada being very involved in the life of the church. Her love of music included playing the piano and singing in choirs and she passed this heritage on to her daughters. She spent her summers at her beloved family cottage in Round Lake Saskatchewan. She also enjoyed attending theatre, playing curling and rarely lost a game of cribbage.

Betty had a way of engaging friends and strangers and will be remembered for her outgoing personality and genuine interest in other people. She will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at The United Church in Meadowood, 1111 Dakota Street, with Reverend Gordon Taylor officiating. A private family interment has taken place at Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens.

A special thank you to the absolutely lovely nurses and hospital staff, for their loving care given to Betty and her family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, in memory of Betty, to the Victoria Hospital Foundation in Winnipeg, or a charity of one’s choice.
