<div itemprop="description"> <p> Laurence (Larry) Arthur Young of Winnipeg, Manitoba passed away peacefully in his 91st year on Monday, February 11, 2013 at Grace Hospital. </p> <p> &nbsp; </p> <p> He was predeceased by his two brothers, Vincent and Earl, both of Winnipeg, and ex-wife Myrle Patricia of Calgary, Alberta. </p> <p> &nbsp; </p> <p> Larry will be lovingly remembered by his daughters Marilyn (Bill) Goedegebuure of Winnipeg and Susan (Richard) Sawka of Calgary; grandchildren Peter (Maybeth) Goedegebuure, Julie (Jeremy) Kehler, Paul Sawka, and Amy Sawka; five great-grandchildren, Danielle, Sam, Ben, Simone and Drew; sister June Ball of Winnipeg and many other nephews and nieces. </p> <p> &nbsp; </p> <p> Born in Winnipeg on January 12, 1922 at the family home on Arnold Avenue, he grew up in the Riverview area of Fort Rouge.&nbsp; The family moved to Morley Avenue when he was nine years old and he attended Kelvin High School.&nbsp; At the age of 18 he joined the 404 &ldquo;Buffalo&rdquo; Squadron, R.C.A. F. and was stationed in the Shetland Islands, Scotland, servicing fighter aircraft during W.W. II.&nbsp; Upon returning to Winnipeg following the War, he married his high-school sweetheart, Myrle Bayley in 1945 at Young United Church.&nbsp;&nbsp; In 1949 he and Myrle purchased a new home on Ashburn Street, where they raised their two daughters.&nbsp; Larry spent most of his working years in aircraft maintenance with Air Canada, retiring at the age of 55.&nbsp; Larry and Myrle spent their early retirement years travelling to Barbados, England, Switzerland and The Netherlands.&nbsp; They enjoyed several winters in New Port Richey, Florida and summers camping at Spruce Woods and Arnes with their travel trailer.&nbsp; They divorced in 1987 and Larry continued living in his house in the West End, where he enjoyed growing vegetables and flowers in his garden.&nbsp; In 1989 he married Reta Webster and continued wintering in Florida until their divorce twelve years later. </p> <p> &nbsp; </p> <p> Larry enjoyed being a grandfather and took a great interest in the activities of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.&nbsp; </p> <p> &nbsp; </p> <p> Larry enjoyed participating in many sports.&nbsp; He was an avid bowler, winning many trophies.&nbsp; He loved the game of golf and represented Winnipeg at many Air Canada system golf tournaments.&nbsp; In the winter he enjoyed curling and cross-country skiing.&nbsp; He was an enthusiastic football fan and held Blue Bomber season tickets for many years.&nbsp; In the summer he loved following the Goldeyes baseball games.&nbsp; </p> <p> &nbsp; </p> <p> Larry enjoyed woodworking projects and produced many useful pieces for the home.&nbsp; He loved repairing things and making them useful again.&nbsp; He was a quiet, unassuming man and generously gave of his time to neighbours and friends.&nbsp; He had a quick wit and was always ready with a joke and a glass of rum. </p> <p> &nbsp; </p> <p> After living in his home on Ashburn Street for over 60 years, he moved to Devonshire House in November 2011, where he made some new friends and enjoyed celebrating his 91st Birthday. </p> <p> &nbsp; </p> <p> &nbsp; </p> <p> The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff at Devonshire House, Concordia Hospital, Heritage Lodge and Grace Hospital for all their good care and compassion during the last months of Dad&rsquo;s life. </p> <p> &nbsp; </p> <p> In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Salvation Army or The Heart and Stroke Foundation. </p> <p> &nbsp; </p> <p> &nbsp; </p> <p> &nbsp; </p> </div>
