Joseph Baker

Nov. 1, 1923 - Dec. 20, 2016

Peacefully, with family by his side, Joseph passed away into the presence of his Lord and Saviour, on December 20 at the age of 93 years. He was predeceased by his parents, Richard and Mary Baker, as well as his four brothers: Robert, Richard, John and David. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 59 years, Arlene, his daughter Catherine and son-in-law Blair, and his four grandchildren: Thomas, Caroline, Patrick and Elizabeth.

Joseph was born November 1, 1923 in Brownlee, Saskatchewan. The family moved to Powell River, BC in 1928 after two successive crop failures. After he graduated from high school in Powell River, he was enrolled at the University of British Columbia. His studies were interrupted when he enlisted with the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers in July 1943. After the war, he resumed his studies, receiving his Bachelor and Master of Science in Agriculture followed by his Ph.D. in Agronomy (Soils) in 1956. During his university studies he met his future wife Arlene, and they were married on March 23, 1957. While employed in Victoria with the federal government’s Forestry Department, a laboratory explosion in 1967 caused him to lose his right eye, as well as extensive injury from acid and glass. In 1970 he was transferred to the Northern Forestry Research Centre in Edmonton, and he remained in the Edmonton area for the next 42 years. He and Arlene moved to Steinbach in 2011 to be near their daughter and family. He thoroughly enjoyed being able to see his four grandchildren frequently and be involved with all of their interests. He had a great sense of humour and loved kibitzing with family and friends.

As a boy 9 he realized his need of salvation and trusted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour. The reality of his faith was evident. He was known to rise early in order to study the Scriptures and pray. Even in his last years when he was legally blind, he could be found with his magnifying glass reading over the Scriptures and writing his thoughts and meditations. He had a deep love of the Lord that was evident in his prayer, worship and conversational life. He enjoyed his time meeting with the believers of Mitchell Christian Assembly at the Good News Centre, and was an example of steadfast and faithful commitment.

A funeral service will be held on December 28, 2016 at 2 pm at the Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Boulevard, Winnipeg, MB.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff of the Emergency and Medicine departments at Bethesda Hospital for their kindness and compassionate care.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Gospel Trust Canada, gospeltrust.ca
