It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Ivan, a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather on Feb 5, 2017 at Middlechurch Care Home, at the age of 89.

He now joins his only son Kenneth, who left us in 2006, and wife Bernice, whom passed in 2010. He was also predeceased by his parents John and Ingrid, siblings: Thelma, Victor, Agnes, Edwin, Ruth, John, Laurence and Lillian.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter-in-law Shirley, grandchildren Dean (Melanie), Karen (Dane), Paul (Joanne) and Great-Grandchildren Kennedy, Tristan, Kieran, Ethan, Addison and Aiden.

Ivan was born in Boissevain, MB on Dec 2, 1927. He was the youngest of 9 children. He spent many years there, helping out at the homestead, as well as lending a hand at neighboring farms, as many young ones did in that day. As years went on, Ivan left the Boissevain area, to make a life for himself in the big city. Ivan found work with the CPR, of which he made a career of 42 years with. It was also in Winnipeg that he met and fell in love with Bernice Livingstone. The birth of their only son Kenneth followed next.

Ivan spent an impressive 42 years with the CPR, until his retirement in 1987. It was quite an opportunity to be hired on at the rail yard at such a young age, but Ivan quickly made a great name for himself because of his hard work and disposition. Ivan was known amongst his co-workers as hard working, honorable and trustworthy. Ivan held different positions during his 42 years, eventually retiring as a Railway Carman. One thing for which he was very proud was the years he spent on the Union board, representing his fellow Union Brothers and Sisters in the local.

In retirement, Ivan and Bernice spent much time at their cabin at Rock Lake. This would often be the gathering spot for Ken, Shirley and their 3 kids, as well as numerous family members that lived in the local area. Much time was spent on the water, either going for boat rides or fishing with the grandkids.

In addition to their cabin, Ivan and Bernice often enjoyed car trips, traveling around the country. Other activities they enjoyed together were: bowling, playing cards with the family (playing 65 in particular!) and of course Ivan’s known game of choice, Cribbage.

A Memorial service will be held at 2 PM, Friday March 17, 2017 at Glen Lawn funeral Home, 455 Lagimodier Blvd.

The family has the deepest appreciation for the staff at Middlechurch Care Home. The care, compassion and love they showed Ivan in his few years there means the world to his family!
