It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Barbara Gatey (nee Burkart) our Mom, Grandmother and Great- Grandmother, on Tuesday, August 2, 2016 in Victoria, B.C.

As the second oldest of eight children, mom was born to Nicklas and Helen Burkart in Holdfast, Saskatchewan and grew up on the family farm near Pilger, Saskatchewan. Barbara moved to Regina in her twenties, where she met Allan Gatey, whom she married in July, 1949. They enjoyed sixty-two years together before his passing in 2011.

Setting up their first home in Lauder, Manitoba, Allan worked for the CPR and Barbara was a homemaker, raising their four children, maintaining a huge garden in the summer and enjoying curling bonspiels in the winter. Mom was always an avid seamstress and could make anything from doilies to clothes as well as crochet blankets. In 1964, Dad’s job took the family to Virden where mom continued to maintain a garden and be a Brownie leader, as well as made sure her children were active in music, swimming and skating lessons.

In 1969 the family was on the move again but this time to Winnipeg. With the children now grown, Barbara worked as a cashier at the Paddlewheel at The Bay for many years. In their retirement, mom and dad kept busy with the Prendergast Seniors Club and in the summers enjoyed their trailer at Spruce Sands on Lake Winnipeg. They always enjoyed visiting the grandchildren and being visited by them. After dad’s passing in 2011, mom spent her last few years in Victoria, B.C. where she was able to take walks to the beach, to visit the animals and children at the park with a petting zoo and to enjoy Victoria’s natural beauty.

Mom was predeceased by her husband Allan (2011) and will be sadly missed by her children, Lynn-Dell Goorachurn (Lekh), Barry Gatey (Jane), Cheryl Eason (Vic) and Shelly Durand (Norm) and her grandchildren, Anil Goorachurn (Amanda), Ashley Goorachurn (Lin), David Gatey (Alison), Laura Gatey, Jenna Iliac (Steve) and Jonathan Durand.

She is also survived by her sisters, Jeanette Schuler, Emily Juby, Doreen Lange (Vern) and Claudine Van Der Velden as well as Allan’s family, Gerry Gatey (Jean), Ed Gatey, Joan Gatey, Helen Carscadden and Deanne Brant along with numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flower,s a donation of your choice to any Charity Organization would be appreciated.
