Peacefully, Ernie passed away with family by his side. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years Kitty, daughter Donna (Ken) Jacques, grandchildren Tom (Robyn), Bruce (Angele) and Shelby. Sister Ollie (Russ) Campbell, brother in law Gordon Simmons and many nieces and nephews.

Having lost his father Adelbjorn at young age, Ernie was raised by his mother Sigridur and three older sisters Helen, Beattie and Ollie. He attended Isbister School and later Daniel McIntyre Collegiate.

He found his dream job in 1954 when he joined the Winnipeg Fire Department. In 1955 Ernie was one of the founding members of the Fire Fighter Toy Campaign that repaired and donated broken toys to St. Joseph’s Orphanage. After 37 years he ended his career as Captain at Fire Hall #19.

Ernie was very involved with music. He started playing the trumpet as a teen, was in the ANAF band for 10 years and the Fire Fighter Band for 25 years. He played Last Post at numerous functions.

He spent many happy hours at the family cabin on Lake Winnipeg and on road trips with his wife.

Many thanks to family, the neighbours on Ridley Street, staff at Taché Centre 5C, and Meadowood Manor for support over the years.

A private Celebration of Life has already taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Fire Fighters Burn Fund.
