Peacefully on Sept. 25, 2015, Columbus Jones, aged 87, passed away at St. Boniface Hospital with his family at his side.
He will be lovingly remembered by his daughters Leslie (Charles), Lorene (Ken), his sons Dennis (Debbie), Nelson (Carol), his grandchildren Allister, Amanda (Sean), Kaila (Matthew), Kelsey, Justin, Alysha, Delaney, Jordan, his great-grandchildren Aleah, Kadeem, Cadence, Myles, Anna and Noah, his brother Clifton, and many nieces and nephews.
Dad was predeceased by his loving wife Betty, parents Columbus and Elnora Jones, sister Inez, and brothers Willie and Clarence.
As a young graduate from high school, Dad left Memphis, TN and embarked on a journey to Canada to work for the CP Railroad as a sleeping car porter. Eventually he would make his way to Winnipeg were he met the love of his life, Betty, and they would marry and raise four children. His career path would change to the City of Winnipeg Transit Dept. where he drove for 33 years until retirement.
Dad was a faithful servant of Christ. In his retirement, he devoted most of his time to St. Joseph the Worker Parish as a spiritual care volunteer and became a Fourth Degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus.
Dad loved the outdoors, including tenting at Falcon Lake and the many years building and relaxing at the family cottage in Northwest Ontario.
But Dad’s greatest joy was being surrounded by his family. He was extremely proud of the accomplishments of his children, and truly enjoyed a raucous game of hide and seek or a quiet game of cards with both his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was brightest when the whole family would gather together to celebrate birthdays and special occasions.
The family would like to thank Dr. Chowdhury of CancerCare Manitoba and the WRHA Palliative Care Program. The family would also like to extend our gratitude for the compassionate care provided by the doctors and staff at the Palliative Care Unit at St. Boniface General Hospital.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2015 at St Joseph the Worker Parish, 505 Brewster St. Transcona, with Father Isaie Blanchette officiating. Viewing will commence one hour prior to mass with reception to follow in the church hall. A Private family interment to follow reception.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Dad’s name to the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation, Palliative Care Endowment Fund, C1026-409 Tache Ave.
